Proof Sets

Official Proof Sets contain proof coins of the year. Proof coins can be distinguished by their sharpness of detail, high wire edge, and extremely brilliant, mirror like surface. Proof sets are only made for collectors not for circulation. How a Proof coin is made is a very time consuming job. First the selected dies are inspected for perfection and are highly polished and cleaned. They are again wiped clean or polished after every 15 to 25 impressions and are replaced frequently to avoid imperfections from worn dies. Coinage blanks are polished and cleaned to assure high quality in striking. They are then hand fed into the coinage press one at a time, each blank receiving two or more blows from the dies to bring up sharp, high relief details. The coinage operation is done at slow speed with extra pressure. Finished proofs are individually inspected and are handled by gloves or tongs. They also receive a final inspection by packers before being sonically sealed in special plastic cases. As you can see these sets are special! They would be a nice addition to your coin collection.

Presidential Proof Sets

Presidential Proof Sets

The United States Mint certifies these proof coins as genuine Presidential Coins struck in accordance with Public Law 109-145. The Presidential Coin Program was created to honor each of the Nation’s presidents in the order in which they served.

Obverse designs bear a likeness of each president. Source materials for these new presidential portraits include the United States Mint’s Presidential Medal Series designs, official White House portraits and intaglio prints originally executed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. The reverse of the new Presidential Coins carries a bold and dramatic image of the Statue of Liberty, extending to the coin’s rim. The Presidential Coins also feature edge-incused lettering, “In God We Trust”, “E Pluribus Unum”, the year of minting or issuance and the mintmark.

Produced by the United States Mint at San Francisco, each proof coin bears the “S” mintmark of that facility. These coins are produced from carefully selected planchets, or coin blanks, that have been burnished to a higher luster. The polished blanks, which are carefully handled to minimize scratches and abrasions, are struck on specially adapted coining presses. Each coin is struck at least twice to ring forth the minutest detail with remarkable clarity.
